In the Douglas Middle School FACS/Home Technology Program, the goal is to reinforce and build academic skills through hands on applications of Family and Consumer Science courses. The students apply academic learning toward the solutions of real-world situations. Our exploratory program focuses on problem solving, critical thinking, hands on participation, cooperation and communication skills. Students are able to learn about curriculum topics such as: food and nutrition, food science, housing and interior design, teen health, wellness, textiles, clothing care, child development, environment, and consumerism. ![]() |
![]() The program is based upon whole group instruction blended with modular instruction. Students have the opportunity to choose a variety of modules based on grade appropriate topics. The modules last for 8-9 days with the students producing a portfolio of projects at the end to demonstrate their learning. Students can work alone or in teams of two. During the module students are immersed into the particular topic doing projects and assignments. Whole group course topics involve kitchen and food safety, nutrition label reading, nutrition, measurements, housing concepts, budgeting and child development study. 7th Grade is based on a nine week format and 8th Grade is for a semester. |
