Yankton, Dakota.
May 29th, 1874
Honorable C. Delano,
My dear Sir:
In several letters from Agent Saville he refers to restlessness
among the Indians on account of rumors of a military expedition
preparing for the Northern part of their country, and begs me
to obtain information that will enable him to contradict these
stories and set the minds of the Indians at rest. - I find in
the Sioux City Journal of today an article which I enclose, which
gives definite shape to these rumors. - It is by such articles
that people are being prepared here for the commission without
remorse of high - handed outrage. - Any such movement as that
here referred to would in the present condition of the wilder
tribes, be like the falling of a spark before a keg of gunpowder,
and is so out of harmony with all that I heard while in communication
with the Department on my recent visit that I have almost felt
at liberty to pronounce authoritatively by that the stories are
without foundation, but I hesitate.
I shall be much relieved in view of my visitation among these
Indians if you telegraph me to Yankton Agency that all such rumors
are without truth, if as I suppose they are thus enable me to
quiet minds disturbed.
With great respect,
Most truly yours,
William R. Hare
