Custer, The Black Hills in 1874 |
|
Joe Sanders, Jack McCulloh |
Begun as a "retirement avocation" for three retired outdoor enthusiasts, the Custer Project has taken on a life of its own. These three investigators adopted GPS technology to document 458 spots along the trail of Custer's Expedition throuogh the Black Hills of Dakota Territory in 1874. Their exhaustive research in State and National Archives is reflected in the documents and photographs included here. When retired corporate CEO Larry Owen passed away suddenly in 1998, retired science teacher Joe Sanders and retired stockgrower executive Jack McCulloh contacted neighboring Douglas School District for technical assistance publishing the project. This web page, GIS projections, and digital photography are the first results of that collaboration. Middle school students will conduct their own field investigations along the trail Spring, 2000. |
