September, 2007 Dear Parents/Guardians:
The Douglas Schools are committed to the district mission to “Prepare all students for the challenges of an ever-changing world”. Accountability is a part of meeting that mission. In 2002, the federal government passed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation. To meet requirements of the law, the South Dakota Department of Education (DOE) adopted academic standards in mathematics and reading. Each school in the state is monitored on the percent of proficient or advanced students in ten student subgroups. The subgroups include: All Students, White, Black or African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American, Hispanic, Economically Disadvantaged, Students with Disabilities, Limited English Proficiency, and Migrant Students.
NCLB requires notification to all parents/guardians with students in schools supported by Tifle I funds if their school is on the state list for not making adequate yearly progress (AYP) goals. In addition, the law requires schools that do not meet the state goal in reading and mathematics, in any one of the ten categories listed above, for two consecutive years, be identified as a school needing improvement. To be removed from the “needs improvement” list requires that a school make its AYP goals for two years in a row.
Another section of NCLB requires, in addition to a school report card, that school districts make a district report card available to the general public. Copies are available at each school office and at the Douglas School District Administrative Building. Report cards can be found on the South Dakota DOE website at hftp://doe.sd.gov/. Our district website (http://dsdkl2.net/) also has links to the state website and to our local report card. Individual student reports will be available at conferences.
Below you will find general AYP information:

Parent/guardian involvement is important to children’s success in school. We encourage you to contact the office where your child attends school or the district office if you have questions on how you might become involved.
Please contact me if you have any questions about the district or school report cards at 923-0000.
Sincerely,
Patricia Smith Peel, Ed. Assistant Superintendent
